Named after Eliza Zamfirescu (1887 - 1973), the world's first chemical engineer.
Due to prejudice against women in the sciences, Zamfirescu came up against much rejection. In 1909 she was finally accepted into the field, going on to graduate in 1912 with an engineering degree - the first woman to ever do so.
Then during World War II, Eliza led several Red Cross Campaign Hospitals, leading to her decoration at the end of the war.
"She was a fantastic woman. A sort of locomotive that took everything after her, on the principle that she could not fail. I think she would have been brilliant in any field if she wanted." - Professor Luliu Popovici.
