Named after the 'Empress of the Blues', Bessie Smith (1894 - 1937). Orphaned in her formative years, Bessie took to street busking as a source of family income. Though performing began out of necessity, Bessie soon became the most iconic blues singer of the 20s & 30s, due to her magnetic contralto voice and fearlessness as a performer.
