Fine Jewellery Care

Fine jewellery is made to be enjoyed. A little thoughtful care helps you wear, clean and store the piece you love with confidence. If something feels different or you are unsure what your piece needs, our team can help.

Everyday care

Wear thoughtfully

A little awareness around daily wear helps protect the shape, settings and finish of fine jewellery. Beauty products are best applied before jewellery goes on, giving perfume, lotions and cosmetics less opportunity to settle on the piece.

Jewellery also benefits from being set aside for showering, swimming, sleeping, exercise, gardening, washing dishes and other hands on or high impact activities. Pressure from weights, heavy bags, hard surfaces and repeated contact can change the shape of precious metals, while knocks and snags can affect stones, settings and chains.

Layering can be part of how you wear your jewellery. The main consideration is weight and movement, as significantly heavier pieces can pull unevenly on finer chains and settings. Clasps are best handled gently rather than pulled or strained.

Different gemstones and settings respond differently to wear. If you are unsure about a particular piece, our team can help with advice specific to its materials and construction.

Store with a little space

Separate storage helps pieces keep their finish and reduces unnecessary contact between stones and metal. A soft lined box or pouch with some space between pieces is a simple starting point, with stored jewellery kept away from perfume and moisture.

Diamonds can scratch other gemstones and even one another, so diamond jewellery is best kept apart from other pieces. Fine chains are easier to protect when they are stored flat and clasped where practical, which can help reduce tangles, kinks and pulling.

Cleaning at home

Check the whole piece first

A cleaning method must suit every gemstone and the setting in the complete piece, including smaller stones around the focal stone. Treatments can also affect what is suitable.

If you are unsure about a stone, setting, treatment or cleaning method, ask our team before cleaning at home.

  • Emerald and opal

Ask our team before cleaning emerald or opal jewellery at home.

  • Home ultrasonic cleaners

Use only when our team has confirmed that ultrasonic cleaning is suitable for the individual stone and setting. Material specific restrictions below still apply.

For suitable pieces

Only use this method once you know it suits the complete piece. Warm water and mild dish soap can be used for suitable diamond jewellery and many durable gemstones.

  1. Add a little mild dish soap to warm water.
  2. Allow the piece to soak.
  3. Clean gently with a soft toothbrush.
  4. Rinse thoroughly.
  5. Pat dry with a lint free cloth.

Avoid harsh chemicals and abrasive cleaners.

When something looks different

Fine jewellery changes with wear. Fine scratches can develop in gold, a rhodium finish on white gold gradually wears, and platinum can develop a matte patina. These can be normal signs of wear.

Ask our team to assess your piece if you notice:

  • a stone moving or rattlingIf a stone moves or rattles, stop wearing the piece until it has been assessed.
  • claws catching or scratching
  • pavé beginning to look uneven
  • visible thinning at the base of a band
  • a ring that no longer sits evenly
  • a kinked or flattened chain
  • a clasp or closure that no longer feels reliable
  • a significant knock or impact

Noticing a change early can help reduce the chance of a more extensive repair. Tell us what you have noticed and, if you know it, the piece name or order reference. Neither is required. Our team can advise on the gemstone, metal and construction of your piece, including questions about wear or cleaning.

Care by gemstone, metal and design

Choose any gemstone, metal or design details you know. You can choose more than one, and you do not need to know every detail of your piece.

Something else in your piece?

If your gemstone, metal or design is not listed, or you are simply unsure, ask our team. We can help you work from the piece you have rather than asking you to identify every detail first.
