Demi Fine Jewellery Care

A little thoughtful care helps you enjoy the pieces you reach for often.

Jewellery Care

Care for the way you wear it

Put your jewellery on after fragrance, lotions, cosmetics and hair products where possible. Removing it before showering, swimming, sleeping, exercising and household cleaning helps reduce contact with moisture, products, pressure and knocks.

After wear, gently wipe your piece with a clean, untreated soft dry cloth. Store it dry and separately in a soft pouch or compartment when you are not wearing it.

Care by material

Start with the materials listed for your piece rather than its colour. Many Demi Fine pieces combine a metal or finish with pearls or stones, so care needs to suit the complete piece.

For routine care, use a clean, untreated soft dry cloth. Silver polishing cloths are different and should only touch suitable exposed sterling silver. Do not use silver polish, silver dip, toothpaste or another metal polishing product on gold finishes, pearls, stones or crystal.

For these mixed material pieces, avoid home ultrasonic and steam cleaning. If you do not know what your piece contains, or a mark remains after routine care, ask our team before trying another cleaning method.

Sterling silver

Sterling silver can naturally develop tarnish as it responds to air and moisture.

For everyday wiping, use a clean soft dry cloth. When tarnish appears, an appropriate silver polishing cloth can gently refresh accessible unplated silver surfaces. Keep the polishing cloth away from pearls, stones, crystal and gold finishes.

If the silver cannot be reached without rubbing another material, or gentle polishing does not address the mark, ask our team before going further.

Gold vermeil

Gold vermeil is a gold finish over sterling silver. Friction, moisture, cosmetics and chemicals can affect its appearance.

Use a plain soft dry cloth for routine care. Remove vermeil rings before handwashing, and keep the finish away from hand sanitiser, creams and excess moisture. Do not use a silver polishing cloth or metal polish on the gold surface.

Freshwater pearls

Freshwater pearls, including baroque pearls, have a soft surface that benefits from gentle handling.

After wear, wipe them with a very soft dry cloth. Keep them away from fragrance, cosmetics, hairspray, prolonged moisture and abrasive products. Do not soak or brush pearls, and do not use ultrasonic or steam cleaning.

Store pearl pieces separately from harder jewellery so their surfaces are not rubbed or scratched.

Cubic zirconia

Use a clean soft dry cloth over the complete piece and store it separately when not worn.

Avoid abrasive rubbing and keep metal polishing products away from the stone. Care should still follow the metal or finish used in the same piece.

European crystal

Use a clean soft dry cloth for routine care and avoid abrasive rubbing.

Keep metal polishing products away from the crystal. The metal or finish around it still needs the same gentle handling.

Lab grown opal

Use the common soft dry cloth routine and protect the stone from knocks and abrasion.

Lab grown describes its origin, not a universal cleaning method for the complete piece. Keep home care dry rather than introducing a soak, brush, ultrasonic or steam routine.

Moonstone

Protect moonstone from hard knocks, high heat and sudden temperature changes.

Use a soft dry cloth for routine care. Do not use ultrasonic or steam cleaning.

Labradorite

Use a clean soft dry cloth and store the piece separately from harder jewellery.

Avoid abrasive rubbing and follow the care needed by every other material and finish in the piece.

Chalcedony

Use a clean soft dry cloth for routine care and protect the piece from knocks and abrasion.

Keep metal polishing products on suitable exposed silver only, not across the stone.

Rose quartz

Use a clean soft dry cloth and store the piece separately from harder jewellery.

Do not use ultrasonic or steam cleaning.

Pink jade

Use the common soft dry cloth routine and avoid abrasive rubbing.

Store the piece separately from harder jewellery and keep metal polishing products away from the stone.

Lab grown rhodolite

Use a clean soft dry cloth for routine care and protect the piece from knocks and abrasive contact.

Lab grown does not determine which cleaning methods are suitable for the complete jewellery, so the surrounding metal, finish and other materials still matter.

Peridot and topaz

Protect peridot and topaz from knocks, pressure and abrupt or uneven heat.

Use a soft dry cloth for routine care. Do not use ultrasonic or steam cleaning.

Tourmaline

Protect tourmaline from knocks, high heat and sudden temperature change.

Use a soft dry cloth for routine care. Do not use ultrasonic or steam cleaning.

Lepidolite

Use a clean soft dry cloth with a light touch and avoid abrasive rubbing.

If the piece also contains pearls or vermeil, follow those gentler surface instructions across the complete piece.

Chains and closures

Chains can be affected by pulling, snagging and significantly heavier layers that draw unevenly on them. Store them flat and clasped where practical, and open and close clasps gently rather than pulling or placing them under strain.

If a closure no longer feels reliable or a stone moves in its setting, set the piece aside and ask our team before wearing it again.

A question about your piece?

If you do not know what your piece contains, a mark remains after routine care, or you have noticed a change in the finish, stone, setting or closure, our team can help.

A piece name or order reference is useful if you have it, but neither is required.
